As the front-of-house manager of a large theatre complex in Calgary, Kate Carpenter is used to several things. She is used to the late nights and the demanding customers. She is used to improvising when things don’t go to plan. And she is used to a quiet life in her perfect apartment with her twin addictions of caffeine and good books.
She is not used to finding dead people in her theatre, but that all changes when Kate and her young assistant, Graham, find a dead man in the theatre’s public toilets – and the murder weapon was a hammer belonging to the theatre.
Despite warnings from virtually everyone, Kate is determined to investigate the murder – even when it leads her into serious danger. She is convinced she can be of more use than the detective assigned to the case, and if the murderer is somebody connected with the theatre then she is even keener to get involved. Two brutal attacks later and Kate still has no answers, but will that be enough to persuade her to stay out of the investigation?

I selected this book because I was looking for a cozy mystery to read on a leisurely Sunday afternoon. For the low price I paid, I guess I got what I paid for. Ugh!House Report (Kate Carpenter Mysteries) is the first book in the Kate Carpenter Mysteries series by author Deborah Nicholson. The story is based in Calgary that has Kate, a 30 something house manager at the large Plex theatre complex who drinks a lot of coffee and smokes lots of cigarettes, find a dead body during one of the performances then someone close to her is accused of the murder. She tries all she can to prove that this person is not the killer. Throughout the story, she places herself in mortal danger, numerous times, to prove her point.
The book has a good story line for a mystery and is easy to read. It provides good information on how theater and performance complexes function. The writing is good, minus a few grammatical errors. However, the story just did not develop adequately and seemed ponderous at times. The author should have cut the book by about 60 pages. In addition, Katie started to get on my nerves with her whining and up and down relationship with her boyfriend. Also, the police procedures were ludicrous. About a third way through, I started to skip some paragraphs or read just the first sentence of each because I could not take reading it any longer. I wanted the story to end. Then when I got to the end and found out whom the killer was, I was terribly disappointed. I said to myself, "Really! I am supposed to believe this." My question was, "It took you all this time to get revenge?" The short synopsize at the end on why the killer did it, did not really pull it together for me.
If you want a light mystery to read that centers on the theater and its behind the scenes operations, this book is for you. The majority of the book does make for a good read. I hope Katie becomes more realistic in the next novel in the series.

House Report Kate Carpenter Mysteries Book 1 edition by Deborah Nicholson Romance eBooks Reviews
Basically, I do like this book. It is a good storyline and interesting as a work of fiction.
The story is well written, and flows nicely. It is easy to read and understand.
The characters are written so you can relate to them. You may not agree with some of them, but we don't agree with people in real life either. Katie is used to a somewhat sheltered existence. She works, goes home and is by herself, then goes back to work. Then this murder happens and Katie is attacked on a number of different occasions and different ways. We have to understand how this has blown her normal quiet existence away.
I have read some of the other reviews, and agree with the ones who wrote not so favorably about this story somewhat but with some reservations.
1. Someone made a comment that wife abuse is not tolerated ever. Well, to a point I do agree. BUT, when you and your wife have been trying for 14 years to get pregnant and your wife up and decides she does not want the baby and has an abortion without consulting you, I would have lost it too. The story has Cam saying everything went black and he does not remember doing it. This is totally possible. His wife MURDERED his child without so much as a by your leave. I would have decked the bimbo too. Fathers have rights.
2. On Katie and how she keeps putting herself into bad situations and this does not make sense. In a way, I do agree with the other reviewers. Then again, let's picture this story as an actual lady with all this stuff happening to her. There is a 'fight or flight' theory about human and animal actions. Well, flight was not in Katie's repertoire. Fight is. So, as hair brained as some of her stunts are, I can sort of understand why she does them. She wants this over and done with.
3. A reviewer commented on how ineffectual the the police was. Well, Ken took her request to be made bait to his superiors. They said since she would get into the flow anyway, it would be better done with police guards. Ken did not like it, but his superiors okayed it. Go figure.
So, do I recommend this book? Yes I do. There is only one problem with it I see. that is the police availability when things happen. They seem to take too long. But, I can't speak as to if this is the norm in Canada, so I accept it.
The book makes for a great read.
